Commercial segment on “106 & Park,” BET * 6/3/2010 AIDS is the #1 killer of African American women, ages 25 to 34. 50% of all reported HIV cases in America are African Americans. In Washington D.C., more than 80% of all reported AIDS cases are African Americans. With one in 20 residents infected, this is more than nine times the national average. Two-thirds of the women diagnosed with AIDS in the US are black. Blacks account for nearly half of the AIDS cases in America. Many black churches have been criticized for their slow response in creating AIDS awareness. US Census Bureau, as reported on “Black in America,” CNN * 7/23/08 HIV is rarely discussed in churches. 22 million people worldwide are known to have died from AIDS. There are 42 million people living today who have been diagnosed positive with HIV. 72% of these cases are residents of Sub-Saharan Africa. There are over 1 million known AIDS cases in America today.
