Wicked Witch Doctor "Don't let the word 'no' stop you. Keep on going," says singer, songwriter, recording artist, model, actor and all-around business man Russell J. Russell Lakey Mathis, Jr.—known as Russell J. Whatever he is doing, Russell J does it wholeheartedly and with an unstoppable grind. Raised in Newnan, Georgia, Russell J began singing in church at the age of eight. He joined the church choir and soon after both he and others began to recognize his musical gift. As a teenager, he went on to compete in several talent shows, enhancing his musical abilities. In 2008, Russell J auditioned for American Idol, where he was told, "You are not what we're looking for." But this didn't stop the determined artist. Shortly after, he began marketing his talent independently throughout the city of Atlanta, performing at fashion shows, clubs and other various events. Russell J welcomes whatever opportunities he is presented with. He keeps an open mind and loves to take risks. He is very artistic and passionate about everything he is involved with. He even performed on a cruise ship, for which he received an award. In 2009, he began pursuing his new-found passion—modeling. Since then, he has worked with several well-known photographers, including Derek Blanks, Terroll Wiggins, Trevor Green and, most recently, with LA photographer Gary Green of "The RockStars of Photography." Early in 2011, Russell J connected with J.W. of J.W. Management, who is the uncle of R&B singer Pleasure P and manager of the award-winning group Pretty Ricky. Through this, he began developing artistically, as he continued to perform at events. Next, Russell J took the biggest risk of his life. On October 19, 2011, he hopped into his car and drove from Atlanta, Georgia, to Los Angeles, California, which became his new home. For him, Los Angeles is "The Land of Opportunity." He has not looked back once, choosing to focus on growing and progressing as an artist and as a person. Russell J enjoys honoring his God-given talents by pursuing his various crafts. His main focus is to become successful in the arts and to be known for his big heart, great music and striking photographs. A highly motivated person, he has begun to mold his vision into one legacy. He keeps God first and stays positive. When it's all said and done, Russell J wants to be remembered among those who have accomplished extraordinary things. With his supportive family by his side, he knows only greatness is to come. He is very grateful to have the continued support of his family, friends and fans.
